Are Rottweilers Good With Kids?

In several countries, they are often one of the breeds preferred by families. Keep in mind, however, that if your home is small, it is not a good idea to take in such a large dog.

Forceful Breed

Rottweilers were one of the first dog breeds to work in the police and military forces. Because of this, people often wonder if they are suitable for a family environment. If they have the potential to be so forceful and intimidating, is it possible for them to integrate well when living with children? The answer is not so simple.

In the case of acquiring a Rottweiler, it is essential to do your homework and make sure you bring a safe animal into your home. As these animals, historically, were raised as service, police, and working dogs, they are intelligent and loyal animals. These qualities make a Rottweiler an exceptional family dog.

However, you should keep in mind the need for proper training. Given the sensitivity and strength of this breed, carelessness in training can prevent them from being suitable for a home with kids and other animals.

To know if they are good with kids, we are going to tell you some curiosities and personality characteristics of this breed. That way, you’ll have more information about them and know how to make them an ideal companion.

There are no potentially dangerous dog breeds, only incorrect training or education by humans. The dogs included in the list of the most dangerous, such as those of the Pit Bull, Doberman or American Staffordshire breed, are within it because of a series of common morphological characteristics that can become dangerous, but that does not mean that they are.

The Rottweiler Breed

First, we have to know what their personality and race characteristics are like. They are robust, muscular and strong dogs; their breed is not one of the biggest, but they have a very corpulent and heavy morphology.

This breed is one of the oldest herding dogs to guide and guard livestock but has also worked as a police dog, including during the First and Second World War and as a guard dog for his strong character in dangerous situations. It was also very famous for the name “Rottweil butcher dog”, a name that was born in Germany, when this breed helped butchers with aggressive livestock.

In spite of its strong appearance, Rottweilers have a calm and balanced character, it is only necessary to correct socialization from the puppy, which can normally be achieved with affectionate treatment and a good education (proper training).

If the environment where the dog lives is adequate, with a responsible and respectful family that gives him a correct education, the Rottweiler will be an excellent pet for children and the rest of the family, with an unbeatable relationship with both dogs and people.

Rottweilers are a feared breed of dogs because many irresponsible owners have badly educated them, even training them to attack. Nowadays, this breed suffers from being used in dog fights, sparring or simply as a guard dog, abandoned on a farm without the love and dedication of a family. In the case of this type of Rottweiler, it would most definitely not be suitable for children or any other dog owner that has no idea of how to manage them.

Interestingly, attitudes of humans make this breed look dangerous, but there are much less corpulent dogs, such as cocker spaniels, of which more cases of biting kids have been registered than in the Rottweiler or pit bull breed.

Relationship of Rottweilers with Children and Family

How are Rottweilers with kids? Answer: as kids are with Rottweilers. This breed, like any other, will behave with children in the same way it has been treated. If the dog receives love, respect, and tranquility, that will be the same as it transmits.

We must never forget that no matter how good a Rottweiler dog is, they will never have the same strength or size as a small dog. By this, we mean that, during any innocent play with children or adults, it can harm kids or adults, but always without wanting to, just as any other dog could do regardless of its breed.

Another thing to consider is that children don’t have the same understanding about dogs as adults do. Most children think of dogs as cuddly toys, and in many cases, have this belief that there dog always loves them and wants to be petted or cuddled.

As adults, we know that this is not always the case. There are times when just like human beings, we need our space, and when we get too much love, it can get a bit annoying. When this happens, a dog could potentially lash out. So when you think about the size of the dog, the potential danger of the child getting hurt does increase, and considering the strength of a Rottweiler, the injury could be serious. That being said, small dogs can also be dangerous if they bite, so it really depends.

Rottweilers are intelligent and obedient dogs, but also protective, so they will always protect their family first. If you are considering getting a dog of this breed, you should take great care of your potential furry friend and think about whether you are prepared and can control its size and physical strength. But most importantly of all, you need to have time to give your dog a good education and socialization as a puppy, always with respect and never with negative training.
